Dr Asma Shakir Khawaja , ED CISS AJK moderated last session of CISS, Islamabad International Conference on Nuclear Deterrence in the Age of Emerging Technologies .

The session 6 discussed the Emerging Technologies and Arms Control: Challenges/ Opportunities on 23rd April 2025.

Her remarks highlighted the following points

Pakistan considers that the role of new and emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Quantum Computing, Big Data, Block Chain and Web 3.0, is undeniable for the progress of any society.

Pakistan has repeatedly raised concerns on the unregulated military applications of the emerging technologies and their used by both State and Non-State actors for destructive purposes and calls for the formulation of a legally-binding instrument to regulate the military uses of emerging technologies in military domain.

Despite advocating the formulation of a global regulatory mechanism, Pakistan also calls for fair and equitable access to new and emerging technologies for the developing countries and contends that if undue restrictions on access to the new and emerging technologies are not removed, developing countries are likely to remain even further behind given the widespread applications of these technologies for the socio-economic development and the achievement of SDGs.
