Presentation at 57th session of the Human Rights Council in Zurich, Switzerland.
Abdul Rehman, Research Officer at the Centre for International Strategic Studies AJK, presented his research at a sideline event of the 57th session of the Human Rights Council in Zurich, Switzerland. Addressing the pressing issue of the conflict-induced climate crisis in Jammu & Kashmir, he emphasized the detrimental impact of India’s ambitious hydropower projects on the food and economic security of Pakistan, the lower riparian state. He also raised concerns about the alarming depletion of Siachen & Pir Panjaal Glaciers due to the significant military presence, underscoring the environmental fragility of this region.
Additionally, he pointed to the adverse effects of the Line of Control on the region’s biodiversity, a critical yet underexplored aspect of the conflict. Highlighting climate vulnerabilities, he detailed how the pastoral communities of Jammu & Kashmir, traditionally reliant on the region’s ecosystems, have emerged as some of the most affected by environmental degradation. His work sheds light on the intersection of militarization, environmental degradation, and the socio-economic implications for marginalized communities in conflict zones.
