Iftar dinner hosted by Ambassador Blome
Dr Asma Shakir Khawaja, ED CISS AJK was invited to attend an Iftar dinner hosted by Ambassador Blome at his residence in Islamabad. Ambassador honored the contributions of Pakistani women , and invited leading female entrepreneurs, civil society activists, and educators to commemorate the holy month of Ramazan and Women’s History Month. Among the attendees was Child Protection Bureau Punjab Chairperson Sarah Ahmad.
Meeting with Principals of Private Colleges of Muzaffarabad
On the 14th of March, 2024, the Center for International Strategic Studies Azad Jammu and Kashmir (CISS AJK) convened its first consultation meeting with the leadership of Private Colleges Muzaffarabad, under the stewardship of Executive Director, Dr. Asma Khawaja. The meeting commenced with an exchange of introductory remarks, wherein both parties introduced their institutional mandates and . ARO Tayyaba Khurshid introduced the guests with the mission and activities of CISS AJK.
The discussion encompassed topics of shared concern, coupled with a deliberative discourse on the modalities required for the establishment of a formal Memorandum of Understanding between CISS AJK and the Private College Association Muzaffarabad. In this regard, an overarching strategy was delineated to pave the path towards enhanced collaboration.
Of particular significance was the recognition and commendation extended by the heads of Private Colleges towards the Outreach program spearheaded by Director Outreach, Dr. Abida Rafique, under the auspices of CISS AJK. Evidencing a pronounced interest in synergistic endeavors, the leadership of the Private Colleges expressed their keenness to engage in collaborative ventures with CISS AJK, signaling a promising trajectory of cooperation between the two entities.
Celebration of International Women's Day with Pearl Continental (PC) Muzaffarabad
Pearl Continental Muzaffrabad’s General Manager Aamir Ayyub organized a vibrant event in honor of International Women’s Day, featuring an array of influential speakers. Dr. Asma Shakir Khawja headlined the event, captivating the audience with her profound insights into gender equity and the vital role of supportive men in women’s success. Her insightful words, “I am because you are,” resonated deeply, echoing the interconnectedness of individuals in society.

Visit of BTTN
A seven-member delegation from the BTTN led by Brigadier (Retired) Agha Ahmed Gul, alongside Executive Director Dr. Zafar, paid a visit to the CISS AJK on March 7, 2024. Research Officer Nazia Sheikh, Associate Research Officer Hira Bashir, and Sana Iqbal Assistant Librarian attended a distinguished lecture series at IPRI. General Zubair Mehmood Hayat, the speaker, provided a thorough analysis of “the emergence of Bharat and its implications.” He emphasized that the transformation involves more than just a name change for the state; it signifies a shift in the nature and character of the state.
Gen. Hayat discussed how Akhand Bharat is rooted in the Hindutva ideology. He highlighted the political and military operationalization of these ideas by BJP and RSS. He expressed concern that India’s pursuit of great power status, inspired by Nazism and fascism, poses a substantial threat to both Muslim and Christian communities.
On January 4, 2024, Executive Director,Dr. Asma Shakir Khawaja, was honored to be a keynote speaker along with Miss Mushaal Hussein Maluck Special Asistant to Prime Minister of Pakistan on Human Rights & Women’s Empowerment, Raja Najabat Hussain Sitara-I-Pakistan Chairman JKSDMI at conference organized by the Scholars Youth Forum AJK and JKSDMI in Muzaffrabad. Her address centered on “The Role of Women, Youth, and Diaspora on Kashmir,” emphasizing the pivotal contributions women can make in elevating the Kashmir issue. She further shed light on the significant impact these groups can collectively wield toward highlighting and resolving this crucial matter.

Research Officer Shahzad Akram and Associate Research Officer Abdul Basit successfully completed the NESA Executive Seminar 02-24 “Strategic Competition and Regional Cooperation” from National Defense University Washington.
Both Research Officers have been officially recognized as alumni of the NESA Center.

The event was organized by the Center for International Strategic Studies (CISS) Islamabad and focused on “Evolving Strategic Stability Trends: Challenges & Way Forward.”

Research Officer Ali Hamza and Associate Research Officer Tayyaba Khurshid participated in a two-day International Conference centered on “Pakistan-Russia Relations Amidst the Evolving Global Landscape.” This conference, organized by the Strategic Vision Institute on November 21st and 22nd, provided a platform for comprehensive discussions on the intricate dynamics between Pakistan and Russia within the context of a changing global scenario.
The engagement of the Research Officers facilitated substantial learning opportunities, particularly concerning the nuanced dimensions of Russia-Pakistan relations. Their participation allowed for meaningful interactions with esteemed Russian delegates, enabling the dissemination of information regarding CISS AJK’s initiatives and activities. This experience proved invaluable in fostering an enhanced understanding of bilateral relations between the two nations.

The CISS AJK team, led by Executive Director Dr. Asma Shakir Khawaja, actively participated in a three-day International Workshop focusing on “Exploring New Frontiers in International Security: Cyberspace, Artificial Intelligence, and Autonomy” held from November 22nd to 24th, 2023. Dr. Asma Shakir Khawaja took on the role of session moderator during the inaugural day of the workshop, contributing expertise to guide discussions.
The workshop was attended by Research Officers Zohaib Altaf and Shahzad Akram, as well as Associate Research Officers Nimra Javed and Rimsha Malik. Their engagement in the workshop facilitated an enriched understanding of their respective domains, allowing for a comprehensive acquisition of knowledge in line with their designated responsibilities.

On October 15, 2023, Dr. Abida Rafique, a Research Officer, was invited as a speaker where she shed light on a highly dynamic aspect of “Humanitarian Crises, Migration, & Displacement.” Her presentation was centered around a detailed case study dedicated to examining the status of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Kashmir, while also delving into their legal position under the purview of international law. Furthermore, her analysis was also enriched by the incorporation of a gender-sensitive perspective.

A delegation from the United Kingdom, comprising Andrew Gwynne MP, Chairman of Labour Friends of Kashmir UK, and Sam Terry MP, Vice Chairman on Kashmir in the British Parliament paid official visit to the Center for International Strategic Studies Azad Jammu and Kashmir (CISSAJK) on September 27, 2023. During their visit, the Director Research Dr. shahid Hameed provided the delegates with a comprehensive overview of the Center’s research endeavors. The delegation expressed their admiration for the research activities undertaken by CISS and extended an offer for prospective collaboration aimed at enhancing the center’s global outreach through participation in international forums.

CISS AJK team Visited Pakistan Institute of Engineering and Applied Sciences (PIEAS) on June14th, 2023. The state of the art research institute is the only university in Pakistan offering Higher Education in Nuclear Engineering. The CISS team visited different research labs and PIEAS research faculty briefed the team about research activities conducted in various labs.
