The Two-Day IHL Certificate Course on International Humanitarian Law (IHL), held on 13 and 14 November 2024, provided participants with a comprehensive understanding of the principles and application of IHL. The workshop focused on the rules governing the conduct of hostilities, emphasizing the limitations placed on methods and means of warfare to ensure the protection of civilians and others not participating in hostilities. Participants explored the origins of IHL, rooted in customary practices and international agreements, and its foundation on the principle of humanity. The course highlighted the critical distinction between combatants and non-combatants, underscoring the legal obligations to protect civilians and those rendered hors de combat, such as the wounded, sick, and prisoners of war. By addressing these essential aspects, the workshop aimed to deepen understanding and promote adherence to IHL in conflict situations.
